A Stranger and a Strange Land

The land he took her to was different than any she'd ever encountered...grass didn't grow here..only rocks dotted the brown land...the trees, though green, were hard and rough to the touch...the streams moved so slow they seemed to stand still...everywhere was silence....no birds singing....no animals in sight...almost like life waiting...sleeping...it suited the young girl..she could continue to live in her world there...quietly live inside of herself...the land of dreams...
The young girl grew into a woman...worked hard and long...did all the man asked of her....
He was neither kind nor cruel...he didn't laugh or smile...like the land he just was...
More years went by...life never changed...every day like the last...until...
The woman heard a sound....not sure of what she heard...she wandered in the direction of the sound....she walked for hours and hours...the sound continued to get stronger...and slowly the land around her changed...it grew greener..the trees softer...and flowers...grass...she found a stream and this was the source of the sound...
A bubbling brook wandered through the trees and grass...a bird landed on a nearby bush and cocking its head as it looked at her...it began to sing...a rabbit came up to her and as it hopped away she followed it...they stopped in a clearing and there before her was a small cottage...the door open...she knocked but no answer...she peeked inside but no one was home...so she sat on the porch and waited...she waited for days...each day she would explore the valley...find more animals....birds...each night she would go to the cottage and find it empty and sleep on the porch...weeks went by and she decided the cottage was hers...no one came to claim it and she wanted it for her own...
She still felt like a stranger in a strange land...but less so than she did anywhere else...
She made a life for herself there...content to be alone...to live the way she wanted to...
She wasn't happy...but she wasn't sad...she just was...
And one day all that changed....
